Ask who, what, where, when, why, and how — plus the words that join sentences.
- 乜嘢mat1 je5what | 你想要乜嘢?= What do you want? (colloquial; often shortened to 乜 mat1 before a noun, e.g. 乜事 = what matter)
- 邊個bin1 go3who | 邊個係你老師?= Who is your teacher? (literally 'which one [person]')
- 邊度bin1 dou6where | 廁所喺邊度?= Where is the toilet? (邊度 also said 邊處 bin1 syu3)
- 幾時gei2 si4when | 你幾時返嚟?= When are you coming back?
- 點解dim2 gaai2why | 你點解唔食飯?= Why aren't you eating?
- 點樣dim2 joeng6how (in what way) | 呢個字點樣讀?= How do you read this word? (often shortened to 點 dim2, e.g. 點做 = how to do it)
- 幾多gei2 do1how much / how many | 呢件衫幾多錢?= How much is this shirt? (幾多 + measure word, e.g. 幾多個人 = how many people)
- 邊bin1which (+ measure word) | 你揀邊本書?= Which book do you choose? (邊 + measure word like 個/本/間)
- 幾gei2how (+ adjective) | 你今年幾大?= How old are you this year? (幾高 = how tall, 幾遠 = how far)
- 做乜zou6 mat1why / what for | 你做乜喊呀?= Why are you crying? / What are you crying for? (very common spoken 'why')
- 幾點gei2 dim2what time | 而家幾點呀?= What time is it now? (literally 'how many o'clock')
- 係咪hai6 mai6is it / yes-no question marker | 你係咪香港人?= Are you (a) Hongkonger? (places 係咪 before the verb to make a yes/no question)
- 同tung4and (joining nouns) | 我同你 = me and you. 我買咗蘋果同橙。= I bought apples and oranges. (同埋 tung4 maai4 is the fuller form)
- 定係ding6 hai6or (in questions, choosing between options) | 你飲茶定係咖啡?= Do you drink tea or coffee? (often shortened to 定 ding6)
- 或者waak6 ze2or (in statements / possibilities) | 你可以打電話或者發短訊。= You can call or send a text.
- 但係daan6 hai6but | 我想去,但係冇時間。= I want to go, but I don't have time. (often shortened to 但 daan6 or 不過 bat1 gwo3)
- 因為jan1 wai6because | 因為落雨,所以唔出去。= Because it's raining, (so) I'm not going out. (因為...所以 pairs together in Cantonese)
