• 〜と思いきや (just when I thought / contrary to expectation)試験は簡単だと思いきや、最後の問題で大いに苦戦した。Just when I thought the exam would be easy, I struggled greatly with the last question.
• 〜までもない (no need to / it goes without saying)そんな簡単なことは、わざわざ説明するまでもない。There is no need to go out of one's way to explain something so simple.
• 〜には及ばない (there is no need to / not as far as)ご足労いただくには及びません。こちらから伺います。There is no need for you to take the trouble of coming; I will visit you instead.
• 〜はおろか (let alone / not to mention)彼は漢字はおろか、ひらがなさえまともに書けない。Let alone kanji, he cannot even write hiragana properly.
• 〜すら (even / not even)あまりの忙しさに、昼食をとる時間すらなかった。I was so busy that I did not even have time to eat lunch.
