Ask who, what, where, when, why, and how — plus the words that join sentences.
- 무엇 / 뭐mueot / mwowhat (뭐 is the colloquial short form, far more common in speech) | 이거 뭐예요? = What is this?
- 누구nuguwho (becomes 누가 nuga as a subject) | 저 사람 누구예요? = Who is that person?
- 어디eodiwhere | 화장실은 어디예요? = Where is the bathroom?
- 언제eonjewhen | 생일이 언제예요? = When is your birthday?
- 왜waewhy | 왜 안 왔어요? = Why didn't you come?
- 어떻게eotteokehow (in what manner / by what means) | 이거 어떻게 해요? = How do you do this?
- 얼마eolmahow much (price/amount) | 이거 얼마예요? = How much is this?
- 몇myeothow many (used with a counter for countable things) | 몇 개예요? = How many (pieces) are there?
- 어느eoneuwhich (always followed by a noun; picks one out of a known set) | 어느 나라 사람이에요? = Which country are you from?
- 어떤eotteonwhich kind of / what kind of (+ noun) | 어떤 음식을 좋아해요? = What kind of food do you like?
- 몇 시myeot siwhat time | 지금 몇 시예요? = What time is it now?
- 몇 명myeot myeonghow many people | 모두 몇 명이에요? = How many people are there in total?
- 그리고geurigoand (connects sentences/clauses) | 밥을 먹었어요. 그리고 커피를 마셨어요. = I ate. And I drank coffee.
- ~하고 / ~와/과~hago / ~wa/gwaand (connects nouns; 하고 is conversational, 와/과 is more formal) | 사과하고 바나나 = an apple and a banana
- 아니면animyeonor (between options/sentences) | 커피, 아니면 차? = Coffee, or tea?
- ~(이)나~(i)naor (attached to nouns) | 커피나 차 마실래요? = Will you drink coffee or tea?
- 그렇지만 / 하지만geureochiman / hajimanbut / however (sentence-initial connector) | 비싸요. 하지만 좋아요. = It's expensive. But it's good.
- ~지만~jimanbut (clause ending attached to a verb/adjective) | 비싸지만 좋아요. = It's expensive but good.
- 왜냐하면waenyahamyeonbecause (sentence-initial; pairs with ~기 때문에 / ~거든요) | 왜 안 왔어요? 왜냐하면 시간이 없었어요. = Why didn't you come? Because I didn't have time.
- ~아서/어서~aseo/eoseobecause / so (the natural everyday way to say 'because'; attached to a verb) | 배가 아파서 못 갔어요. = I couldn't go because my stomach hurt.
