• ஈīLong 'ee' like the 'ee' in 'see' or 'meet'
• உuShort 'u' like the 'u' in 'put' or 'book'
• ஊūLong 'oo' like the 'oo' in 'food' or 'moon'
• எeShort 'e' like the 'e' in 'pet' or 'bed'
• ஏēLong 'e' like a steady, drawn-out 'pet' (pure vowel, not the 'ay' glide in 'cake')
• ஐaiDiphthong 'ai' like the 'i' in 'mile' or 'eye'
• ஒoShort 'o' like the 'o' in 'pot' or 'hot'
